Chocolate covered ants have been a thing for quite a while now. A delicacy even up north, yet there is a difference between a novel, slightly weird, possibly tasty (I have no idea) ‘treat’ and the notion of insects forming a regular part of our diet.
In that light, perhaps it should come as no surprise that the Food Standards Agency is running a consultation on legislation regarding ‘novel’ food regulations for ‘edible insects’. Taken in isolation, this news might be nothing more than of interest. However, given the wider context of looming food shortages, farming under sustained threat and spiraling inflation, the picture becomes much clearer.
One thing is for certain, when you tuck into your plant based ‘lamb’ burger with a side of fried ‘roaches, the rich and powerful will still be enjoying the real deal – no misteak.
